Food safety during pregnancy

During pregnancy, a pregnant person’s immune system is reduced. Therefore pregnant people are at an increased risk of contracting the bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause illness. Foodborne illnesses can be worse during pregnancy and may lead to miscarriage, premature labour or health problems in newborn babies.

New Zealand Food Safety has a guide to food safety in pregnancy. This outlines what foods to avoid eating in pregnancy.
